Sowing, Ever Sowing

I decided to try something different this year.  Instead of buying all of my garden plants, flowers, and vegetables at the green house, I decided to grow my own from seed.

I have always been fascinated by the amazing ability of one tiny seed and what can come from such a "simple" process.

I started back in February and man is it a process!

I figured all my seeds would need was soil, water and sunshine right?? No, it's not quite that simple! After a lot of equipment, grow lights, fertilizer and countless transplants later, we were on our way.
I was so excited to see the progress of each little seedling.
The boys planted pea seeds out in the garden back in March.
They had a great time helping me arrange the trellis and preparing the soil.

Now we just had to wait and water.........

And a couple of months later.....we had peas!!

Spiderman's first taste...
Mmm! A delicious and rewarding result!
However, it has taken 5 month for me to see my reward.  My first Dahlia bloomed yesterday and it is gorgeous!
The pictures don't do it justice, but it is yellow, with a bright orange/red center.
I think it was worth it after all. Thanks to my friend Stacy, I learned a lot and I will be more prepared for next year. It really is an amazing process!  My newest desire- go to botany school someday!

Gardening (especially for seed) can be addicting. It does take a LONG time to see the reward. It'd be so much easier to plop in the instant color from the store...but this way you get the lift-me-up from the seed catalogs in dead-winter AND the joy of seeing the progress!
Good work with what you've done. Your yard (which looks big in these picts!) looks good.
