I think it's funny to compare how different it is to read with each of my boys one on one. Their personalities are so evident, just in sitting down for a few minutes to read a story.
Spencer loves to challenge himself by reading advanced books. He loves any book about nature, or animals (shocking, I know). His Grandma Martin let him borrow one of her animal "encyclopedias" and he will scan the pages for hours at a time. He is so fascinated by every tiny fact about the most random animals. It's a very advanced book for him to be reading right now, but that doesn't stop him. He will read at a snails pace if he has to, in order to pronounce each word correctly. If he gets stuck on a word, he WILL NOT move on until I come and help him pronounce it. So if I am tied up with something else, he will sit for 3-4 minutes just waiting for me to come help him with ONE word. I am often telling him, "Just sound it out the best you can and move on." But he refuses. He'd rather wait for help and pronounce it the "right" way. That's our Spencer! There aren't many things in life that Spencer doesn't do at a snails pace. In his own time...in his own way...(the "right" way).
However, Preston has quite the opposite reading style. He loves to challenge himself while reading, but he reads SO fast that I can barely keep up with which word he's on. He often mispronounces words or just "guesses" what the word is in order to move on to the next. I often have to say, "Slow down Bud. Sound the words out, don't just guess what the word is based on the beginning sound". Preston loves to read, but he is SO impatient with himself. And that's our Preston! So much to do...in SO little time...
I have been noticing my own reading style lately. I have always carefully read each word; pronouncing every syllable, EVEN WHEN READING SILENTLY TO MYSELF! I can't just breeze through each sentence and get the basic idea, I have to read it carefully and "perfectly". And Nate has a very laid back personality and maybe that's why he reads so stinkin' fast. Because he doesn't pronounce and analyze every syllable. He whizzes through, gets the gist, and moves on.
I just think it's hilarious that our personalities so evident in every facet of life. We are who we are, inside and out:).

And we come that way. Amazes me all the time how much of my girls' personalities are different and just the way they are while being exposed to the same environment and parenting. Keeps me on my toes.
Interesting, and very true. My two girls match the styles of your boys. #1 slow and meticulous in reading and new challenges. #2 rushed and more interested in the overall thrill. #3 is MORE into books than either. He is constantly toting one around. We'll see how he is when it comes to sounding words out.
I scan and get the gist when reading. Matt slowly reads and rereads each paragraph. I think if he were less particular he'd be more willing to read and not just put the book down thinking it is a waste of time....
Hmmm. Yep. Interesting. :)
